Caught at Cootamundry
In April this year, former NSW Government Railways loco 3801 was restored to operating condition after a 12 year absence, and began an extensive touring program around the state, starting with the Main South line to Albury.
With a few mates, we booked tickets to ride behind the train from Junee to Cootamundra and return, which would give us the opportunity to photograph a second trip.
A 600km drive after work on the Friday saw us arrive in Junee, ready for the trips the next day, and to the news a third later trip had been added, giving more photo opportunities.
We chose a spot at Bethungra where the line loops on itself, and after getting a shot there, set off in pursuit of the train. It beat us to the next crossing, and, given my old Land Cruiser isn’t the fastest car on the road, we were hopeful, but not certain of getting in front of it by our next choice, Cootamundry Creek, on the outskirts of Cootamundra.
Under the bridge, there was a few people waiting for the train, so a quick setup on the bulbar for some extra height with the light fading, the train came into view. That’s the tale of Caught at Cootamundry.
