Driving South

from $247.00

In April this year, a few friends and I piled into my old Landcruiser for an almost 2000 km four day trip to ride behind, and photograph freshly restored New South Railways Government Railways locomotive 3801. Out of service for over 12 years, it was great to experience the pinnacle of steam for that state, on the track it was designed for, the Main South line to Albury.

An early start on the last day of our trip had us through Junee just after sunrise, and although I’d driven the road the previous morning, the light, and curve of the track caught my eye as we came around the curve.

A quick U turn, and doubling back bought us to a vantage point on the side of the road, up near a farmers fence. Shivering in the cold, the big 38 was eventually heard climbing out of Junee, and eventually swung into view, the cold steam hanging in the air.

Of the four days, this is one of my favourite shots, and the first one I had printed at a decent size for my own railway room.
