Smoke Trails

from $247.00

In the 1950s, the Victorian Railways had to invest heavily to recover from a heavy wartime use of its by then mostly 30+ year old fleet of locomotives.

They designed a new locomotive, the R Class as a passenger locomotive, and ordered 70 from the North British Locomotive Company in the UK. The Hudson wheel arrangement of four pony wheels, six driving wheels, and four trailing wheels was unique to this class in Australia. However the New York Central Railroad was a fan of it, and the classic Dreyfuss designed Art Deco streamliners from the 30s, and others that followed were of the same arrangement.

R761 is one of a handful that still exist, and four that are still operational, and, something to appreciate as it thunders towards, and past you as in this shot of the train on its way to Seymour from Melbourne.
