3801, the pride of the New South Wales government railways is the epitome of style. One of five 38 class built in the 1940s encased in the stunning Streamline Moderne streamlining, the engine hauled the glamour services such as the Newcastle Flier, and Melbourne Limited express trains. In preservation, the loco has travelled to Alice Springs, Melbourne and Perth, adding to its mythology as one of Australia’s most famous locomotives.

After a major overhaul, it returned to service in 2021, and I was fortunate to be able to photograph the loco as it sat at rest in Junee yard, gently simmering before a weekend of excursions to Cootamundra and Uranquinty.

Even when resting, the locomotive is an impressive sight, I was certainly captivated as I took a series of photographs, and sat for a while just admiring the scene.

I hope the print will also give hours of enjoyment, admiring the pinnacle of express passenger locomotives in NSW.
